Lactose intolerant?

a little over a week ago, i found that drinking milk gave me diarrhea. so i started drinking soy milk, is it ok for me to drink normal milk again? or is it like permanent? my cousin was lactose intolerant and had to drink lactose-free milk for a while and he drank normal milk again.

Was that a sudden thing, or have you noticed gassiness and abdominal discomfort in the past after drinking milk? Have you had the stomach flu lately?

Sometimes you can outgrown the lactose intolerance; my son did after he got to college.
For now, you can drink lactose-free milk, and when you have other dairy products like ice cream, you can take a Lact-aid tablet. That's what my daughter and I have to do with any dairy products, including butter (but excluding yogurt with live cultures).
It's hard to say if or when you may outgrow it. You'll have to experiment with small amounts of regular dairy to see how they affect you.
If you are truly lactose intolerant you will never be able to drink it without taking something for it such as Lactaid pills, without getting sick to your stomach
start wuth small sips, wait for a few hours then build up to a cup of milk. you may have eaten something that goes bad with milk.
Soy milk is good for a while.
After that, try to get back to regular milk, but do it slowly. There are people who will not produce the necessary enzymes to digest milk (such as 90% of Asians!).
If you start very slowly, a quarter of a glass a day, for 2 weeks, than increase another quarter to a total of half a glass and after a month go to one glass. If that does not produce bloating or diarrhea, you can keep it up. If not, stay away from all milk products with lactose. Buy lactose free, or buy the pills that help you to digest lactose (such as Lactaid).
You are probably lactose intolerant. Try drinking whole milk and if you start having trouble breathing or get sick the next day you are. Try eatting yogurt and cheese to see if it is just milk.

I wouldn't take it as a biggy because even though its a harsh lifestyle change there are alternatives to dairy. I'm intolerant to wheat, dairy and gluten and somehow i've coped so i don't think it'll make too much of a difference apart from when eating out. But I really don't think you should self diagnose yourself as permanently lactose intolerant, instead of coming on here for the answer, honestly, you should go and see a doctor.
